Are you using social media to promote your business? If not, why not?
Unfortunately, there are still a large number of businesses that are missing a window of opportunity by failing to incorporate social media into their outreach.

Many fail to do so for a myriad of reasons: Fear of the unknown, fear of using the computer, hasn't taken the time to make it happen, fear of cost (most social media networks are free) are some common push-backs used.

Admittedly, there is an overwhelming list of options, and each new day ushers in a new technology with a made-up and often ridiculous sounding name that everyone insists you use.

There's Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, delicious, Linkbait, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, digg, Blogspot, Wordpress, Frindster, Google Buzz, Mixi, Reddit, MyLife... "Alright already" It's enough to make you pack your bags and run away from the wiles of social media.

Now you can see why it's easy to "stick-your head in the sand", and decide you want no part of the whole wave. This too is why many of the old timers still have not jumped into the fray, it scares them, and in fact, it can be very confusing.

It does not matter what industry you are in --- online or offline, social media will find its way into the way you do business whether you deny it or not.

It is now a way of life and quickly becoming a must if you plan to keep your business afloat and competitive. Even those who are still in denial will find that each day, they will accept it more and gradually find they must use it.

Take a moment and think back it was not too long ago---1996 - 1998, that's when we saw the commercialism of the World Wide Web, and the dot com boom came into play 1999-2001. As you can see, the onslaught of technology, in essence, is still in its' infancy.

In the beginning it was highly unusual and out-of-the norm for businesses to have a website. At one time only a landing page was needed, and to have a web address on a business card, flyer, or brochure was simply unheard of.

Now, you are expected to have a website and instead seeking your phone number, the average customer will now quickly ask, without hesitation: "What's your website address?"

Social media has arrived and is "alive and well" and it is headed down the same path as the WWW and dot.com boom.

Today, your current customers might not expect customer service via Twitter. They might even say, "What's Twitter?" But your next customer, your future customer, they're probably going to say, "What's your Twitter name?" After all, they are already trying to befriend you on Facebook.

As the up-and coming generation continues to maximize technology in every way imaginable, businesses will find that the only way to communicate with these techy customers and tap into their customer base will require them to stop now and take the time to broaden their social media savvy.

Now is your chance to practice and prepare and perfect your social media presence before customers demand it. It's here. I promise. The days of the telegraph, beepers and telephone booths are gone, just as land-line telephones have started to rapidly disappear.
They're headed towards social media. And I it should be your goal to join them NOW!

Success in social media is about the interaction you have to engage your customer in conversation. If you have already started to dabble in social media, check to see if you are managing it the right way. If you see that you are not conversing with you customers, then social media will yield disappointing results. Next, focus on finding topics that are relevant to your niche and position yourself as an authority, this will give you plenty to discuss because they will now look to you, the expert for advice/information.

Finally, leverage your media channels to fuel a conversation about those topics or specific niche that interest your audience. This process is the foundation for a social media strategy.

To your social media success.
